Sir,
I am directed by Lord Passfield to acknowledge
the receipt of your letter F.3149/57/10 of the 4th July
on the subject of the Canton-Kowl con and Canton-Hankow
Railways and to transmit for the information of
Mr. Secretary Henderson a copy of a telegram which has
been addressed to the Governor of Hong Kong.
2.
As regards the rehabilitation of the Canton-
Kowloon Railway, Lord Passfield had not intended to
suggest that any definite assurances on this subject
should be obtained from the Chinese Government in con-
nection with the Boxer Indemnity Settlement but only
that any suitable opportunity which might present
itself should be taken of informing the appropriate
Chinese authorities of the importance attached by
His Majesty's Government and the Government of Hong Kong
to the rehabilitation of the Chinese section of this
Railway
THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE,
FOREIGN OFFICE.
